Looking for a reliable CD player for sound effects?

Stanton CD playerNo sponsorship, no ulterior motive, just wanted to bring to the attention of the FEATS community this useful piece of kit currently available at a bargain price.

I bought one several years ago for Tagora, and haven’t regretted it. The Stanton S252 CD player (pictured) is aimed especially at DJs, but excellent also for stage sound-effects. It’s instant-start – push the button and it plays, with none of the delay common in domestic CD players. It has large rubber buttons and an illuminated display, making it easier to operate in low lighting conditions. And in use we have found it 100% reliable, which is more than can be said for certain “professional” installations we’ve come across in theatres. It also has digital output, in case you are lucky enough to have the use of a compatible amplification system.

The only slight problem we’ve encountered is a reluctance to play certain re-writable CDs. However, that’s something that will be discovered well before it comes to the crunch; and in performance our slightly older model has been rock-solid.

This is a personal recommendation, and not necessarily endorsed by the FEATS organisation. But if you’re in the market for a new CD player for your productions, I encourage you to consider this machine, which is currently on sale from Thomann and Amazon (Germany) at under €100.
